There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.11.Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.A.if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsB.if we complete the short-term goalsC.if we have dreams of the futureD.if we put forward some plans12.New short-term goals are built upon______.A.a daily basisB.your achievement in a weekC.current activitiesD.the goals that have been completed13.When we complete each step of our goals, ________.A.we will win final successB.we are overwhelmedC.we will build up our confidence to achieve successD.we should have strong desire for setting new goals14.What is the main idea of this passage? _______A.Life is a dynamic thing.B.We should set up long-term goals.C.Different kinds of goals in life.D.The limitation of long-term goals.15.Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage? _______A.The long-term goals cannot amount to very much without achieving short-term goals.B.The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.C.Life is a static thing, thus never allowing a long-term goal to limit us.D.We should often add new short-term goals to what have been completed.

Defending the Theory of Evolution Still Seems NeededJudith S. Weis, a biology professor who serves as president of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) is leading a nationwide effort to "defend" the theory of evolution. Weis leads the effort in the face of what the institute views as opposition and indifference from school boards and government entities. The Institute believes that the teaching of evolution in America is being diminished by the teaching of creationism as well as by an overall lack of teaching Darwin's theory in high school. "There's nothing that requires schools to teach evolution. Sometimes teachers in high schools just leave it out. However from the point of view of biologists, evolution is the central theory of biology upon which everything is based," said Weis. "Unfortunately, teaching evolution has become a political issue in many parts of the country and AIBS, as a representative of biologists, wanted to be a major force speaking out in favor of its teaching. "Weis said the institute is working together with the American Geological Institute and the National Association of Biology Teachers and its 80-plus member organizations to address" the political and legislative threats to teaching evolution. In states challenging its teaching, the institute responds by sending letters to school boards and state legislatures, by providing testimony at public meetings and by notifying members and affiliated organizations. AIBS, with more than 80 member societies and 250,000 members, has established an email system enabling scientists and teachers in each state, and member societies, to keep each other informed about threats to the teaching of evolution.Darwin's theory of evolution holds that living things change and adapt to their environment and that present-day species ( including human beings) are descended from earlier species through modification by natural selection. The theory has been accepted by scientists for nearly 100 years, Weis said, and has been refined, extended and strengthened over the years by findings in paleontology and developmental biology. Discoveries in genetics, molecular biology and genomics—all of which provide significant benefits for human health—would not be possible without the underlying knowledge of evolution. And, Weis adds, "modem molecular biology and genomics have increased our understanding of how evolution works." Nonetheless, evolution remains a politically, if not scientifically, controversial issue.Weis said that this year alone, seven states have had either local or statewide efforts to water down the teaching of evolution, or "balance" it with the teaching of creationism—a religious belief that different species were created separately by a higher power, such as God. "Rarely does anyone now use the word ' creationism, ' because that's too obvious," Weis said. "The current terminology is ' intelligent design. ' "According to the first paragraph, which of the following statements about the theory or evolution is true?A.Government entities support AIBS's effort to defend the theory of evolution.B.School boards oppose AIBS's effort to defend the theory of evolution.C.AIBS and school boards advocate the teaching of the theory of evolution.D.The theory of evolution and that of creationism co-exist peacefully in schools.

That's not to say that memory doesn't change throughout life.Researchers divide memory into categories based on the length of time when memories are stored. One system divides it up as short-term(less than one minute;remembering a telephone number while you dial, for in-stance),long-term(over a period of years)and very long-term memory(over a lifetime).3. Short-term memory isn't mastered until about age 7,but after that you never lose it. Long-term memory, however, involves more effort and skill and changes more through life. It's not until the early teens(十几岁)that most people develop a mature long-term memory.4. First,we must get information into our heads through learning.Learning strategies can get rusty(生锈)without constant use. High school and college students, who are forced to repeated-ly exercise their long-term memory abilities(at least long enough to get them through a final ex- am),usually do well on memory tests. The longer you stay in school, the more chance you get to polish your learning skills. It's no wonder that more highly educated people have more effective memory skills throughout life.5. Although older people in general learn somewhat more slowly than they did when younger,a dramatic difference exists between those who stay intellectually active—reading,discussing,tak- ing classes, thinking—and those who do not. Giving the brain daily workout(锻炼)is just as important as exercising your muscles.Brainwork keeps your learning strategies in shape, and this helps your memory to function at full capacity.6.The next part of a healthy long-term memory is retention(记忆力),the ability to store what you have learned.Memory researchers still do not know whether memories are los—whether they still exist in the brain but our mental searching cannot turn them up,or have disappeared entirely as our brain ages.7. The third necessity for memory is recall, the ability to bring to mind the memories we have stored .Again, while aging has widely different effects on the recall abilities of different people, research indicates that the older we get,the longer it takes to recall facts. But slower recall is still recall. In fact, aging does not seem to have any effect on forgetting at all, which takes place at the same rate in younger and older people. The rate of forgetting is the same_________.A: for younger and older peopleB:to the proper function of your memoryC: is called long-term memoryD:the capacity to store what you have learnedE:belongs to very long-term memoryF:the ability to remain mentally healthy
