I used to think education was the most important thing in my life. Recently my attitude has begun to change, although I still hold that it is essential for everyone in the world today. As a top junior student in my college, I was asked to make a speech on how to learn English well. Standing in front of the audience and facing so many freshmen, I was trembling. I didn't remember any word that I had prepared. I ran out of the conference room without finishing my speech, leaving everyone puzzled. I cried that night in my room, feeling that I was a loser. Studying takes so much of my time that I feel unable to really develop myself. I am just storing knowledge; yet fail to communicate with others. I have received many awards in school, but they don't necessarily reflect anything about me. I don't know how to socialize. When I leave school I fear I will be of no use to society.

I realize that everyone has her or his own way of living. I want to change my lifestyle. Of course I will keep studying. Yet I plan to look for a part-time job, which might turn out to be a good chance to get to know society. I still believe that working my hardest does make me happy. I will still stay on in college, but I will not allow it to shelter me from the real world.

Knitting
My mother knew how to knit(编织),but she never taught me. She assumed, as did many women of her generation, that knitting was no longer a skill worth passing down from mother to daughter. A combination of feminism(女权主义)and consumerism(消费主义)made many women feel that such homely accomplishments were now out of date.My Grandmother still knit-ted,though,and every Christmas she made a pair of socks for my brother and me,of red wool. They were the ones we wore under our ice skates(冰鞋),when it was really important to have warm feet.
Knitting is a nervous habit that happens to be productive. It helped me quit smoking by giving my hands something else to do .It is wonderful for depression because no matter what else happens, you are creating something beautiful.Time spent in front of the television or just sitting is no longer time wasted.
I love breathing life into the patterns. It's true magic, finding a neglected,dog-eared old book with the perfect snowflake design, buying the same Germantown wool my grandmother used, in the exact blue to match my daughter's eyes, taking it on the train with me every day for two months, working enthusiastically to get it done by Christmas, staying up late after the stockings are filled to sew in the sleeves and weave in the ends.
Knitting has taught me patience.I know that if I just keep going, even if it takes months, there will be a reward. When I make a mistake,I know that anger will not fix it,that I just have to go back and take out the stitches(针脚)between and start over again.
People often ask if I would do it for money, and the answer is always a definite no.In the first place, you could not pay me enough for the hours I put into a sweater. But more important, this is an activity I keep separate from such considerations.I knit it to cover my children and oth-er people I love in warmth and color. I knit to give them something earthly that money could never buy.
Knitting gives my life an alternative rhythm to the daily deadline.By day I can write about Northern Ireland or the New York City Police Department and get paid for it,but on the train home, surrounded by people with laptops,I stage my little rebellion.I take out my old knitting bag and join the centuries of women who have knitted for love.

According to the passage, which of the following statements about knitting is NOT true?
A: Knitting helps one get rid of bad habits.
B: Knitting helps one get free from a bad mood.
C: Knitting requires patience.
D: Knitting is a profit-making business.

答案:D
解析:
第一段第三句明确提供了此问题的答案,只是变换了表达方法即把“made many Women feel”改为“were influenced by”而已。

to quit = to stop , cease , discontinue or to give up。

选项D在短文第五段尤其第一句作者已明确说“编织不是为了挣钱”;选项A在短文第二段第二句得到证实("It helped me quit smoking");选项B在短文第二段第三句已得到证实("it is wonderful for depression");选项C在短文第四段尤其第一句也得到证实("knitting has taught me patience")。

BIn the fall of 1924 Thomas Wolfe, fresh from his courses in play writing at Harvard joined the eight or ten of us who were teaching English composition in New York University.I had never before seen a man so tall as he,and so ugly.I pitied him and went out of my way to help him with his work and make him feel at home. His students soon let me know that he had no need of my protectiveness. They spoke of his ability to explain a poem in such a manner as to have them shouting with laughter or struggling to keep back their tears,of his readiness to quote in detail from any poet they could name.Indeed, his students made so much of his power of observation that I decided to make a little test and see for myself. My chance came one morning when the students were slowly gathering for nine o‘clock classes.Upon arriving at the university that day,I found Wolfe alone in the large room which served all the English composition teachers as an office. He did not say anything when I asked him to come with me out into the hall, and he only smiled when we reached a classroom door and I told him to enter alone and look around. He stepped in,remained no more than thirty seconds and then came out.“Tell me what you see.”I said as I took his place in the room, leaving him in the hall with his back to the door.Without the least hesitation and without a single error,he gave the number of seats in the room, pointed out those which were taken by boys and those occupied by girls, named the colors each student was wearing, pointed out the Latin verb written on the blackboard, spoke of the chalk marks which the cleaner had failed to wash from the floor, and pictured in detail the view of Washington Square from the window. As I rejoined Wolfe,I was speechless with surprise. He,on the contrary, was wholly calm as he said,“The worst thing about it is that I‘ll remember it all.”Which of the following is NOT said in the passage A.Wolfe‘s students praised Wolfe’s power of observatioB.The author made an experiment on Wolfe‘s abilitC.Wolfe‘s students asked the author to have a test of their abilitD.Wolfe did not feel angry when he was teste答案:C解析:
