Why were Anna's friends puzzled when she shared her house with a family that had lost everything?________________________.
Dear Madam/Sir, I’m writing to claim for the insurance on my camera, which was stolen during my honeymoon last month in South America. It was mid-morning on 3 June. My wife and I were lying on the beach outside our hotel.A man came up to us to ask for directions. We had a small map of the island. As we were showing him our map, a group of children came along. We thought they were with the man who was asking directions. The children started to ask my wife some questions and she took their picture. The man sat down and talked to us while the children were playing nearby. As he was leaving, we realized that the children were not with him. Suddenly, one of them grabbed my wife抯 handbag and ran away along the beach. I chased him, and my wife followed me. The child dropped the bag, and so we got it back. We were walking back along the beach when we realized that we had left the camera behind. When we got back to our place, the camera was not there and nor were the rest of the children. The same day I reported the matter to the local police. I bought a replacement camera the next day and I enclose a receipt. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours faithfully, Tim Manning(1). Back in the old days, when I was a child, we sat around the family round table at dinnertime and exchanged our daily experiences. It wasn't very organized, but everyone was recognized and all the news that had to be told was told by each family member. We listened to each other and the interest was not put-on; it was real. Our family was a unit and we supported each other, and nurtured each other, and liked each other, and--we were even willing to admit--we loved each other.Today, the family round table has moved to the local fast-food restaurant and talk is not easy, much less encouraged.Grandma, who used to live upstairs, is now the voice on long distance, and the working parent is far too beaten down each day to spend evening relaxation time listening to the sandbox experience of an eager four-year-old.So family conversation is as extinct as my old toys and parental questions such as "What have you been doing, Bobby? " have been replaced by "I'm busy, go watch television. "And watch TV they do; count them by the millions. But it's usually not children's television that children watch. Saturday morning, the children's hour, amounts to only about 8 percent of their weekly viewing.Where are they to be found? Watching adult television, of course, from the Match Game in the morning, to the afternoon at General Hospital, from the muggings and battles on the evening news right through the family hour and past into Starsky and Hutch. That's where you find our kids, over five million of them, at 10 p.m., not fewer than a million until after midnight! All of this is done with parental permission.Television, used well, can provide enriching experiences for our young people, but we must use it with some sense. When the carpet is clean, we turn off the vacuum cleaner. When the dishes are clean, the dishwasher turns itself off.Not so the television, which is on from the sun in the morning to the moon at night and beyond !Parents must exercise some control and show some concern about the cultural influence on the child whena program not intended for that child is viewed.Parents need to intervene.Nonintervention may be a wise policy in international affairs, but the results of parental nonintervention will not be wise at all.If we use television with some __________ , television can provide our young people with much knowledge.A.instruction of expertsB.judgment of our ownC.direction of engineersD.indication of teachers
In our contemporary culture, the prospect of communicating with--or even looking at--a stranger is virtually unbearable.Everyone around us seems to agree by the way they fiddle with their phones, even without a 1 underground. It's a sad reality--our desire to avoid interacting with other human beings--because there's 2 to be gained from talking to the stranger standing by you.But you wouldn't know it,3 into your phone. This universal armor sends the 4:"Please don't approach me."What is it that makes us feel we need to hide 5 our screens? One answer is fear, according to Jon Wortmann, executive mental coach. We fear rejection,or that our innocent social advances will be 6 as"creepy,".We fear we'll be 7.We fear we'll be disruptive.Strangers are inherently 8 to us,so we are more likely to feel 9 when communicating with them compared with our friends and acquaintances. To avoid this anxiety,we 10 to our phones."Phones become our security blanket,"Wortmann says."They are our happy glasses that protect us from what we perceive is going to be more 11.”But once we rip off the bandaid, tuck our smartphones in our pockets and look up,it doesn't 12 so bad.In one 2011 experiment, behavioral scientists Nicholas Epley and Juliana Schroeder asked commuters to do the unthinkable:Start a 13.They had Chicago train commuters talk to their fellow 14."When Dr.Epley and Ms.Schroeder asked other people in the same train station to 15 how they would feel after talking to a stranger, the commuters thought their 16 would be more pleasant if they sat on their own,"the New York Times summarizes.Though the participants didn't expect a positive experience, after they 17 with the experiment,"not a single person reported having been snubbed."18,these commutes were reportedly more enjoyable compared with those sans communication, which makes absolute sense,19 human beings thrive off of social connections. It's that 20:Talking to strangers can make you feel connected.8选?A.unreasonableB.ungratefulC.unconventionalD.unfamiliar
We experience a burst of pleasure when we share our thoughts, and this drives us to communlcate. It is a useful feature of our brain, because it ensures that knowledge, experience and ideas do not get buried with the person who first had them, and that as a society we benefit from the products of many minds.Of course,in order for that to happen, merely sharing is not enough. We need to cause a reaction. Each time we share our opinions and knowledge,it is with the intention of having an impact on others. Here's the problem, though:we approach this task from inside our own heads. When attempting to create impact,we reflect on what is persuasive to us,our state of mind.our desires and our goals. But if we want to affect the behaviours and beliefs of the person in front of us,we need to understand what goes on inside their head.

问答题In this section, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully, and then complete the summary below by choosing a maximum of three words from the passage to fill in each of the blanks. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. Everyone knows about pollution in the environment. Water, air, and land are all polluted. This means that pollution is everywhere. Now, scientists are looking inside our bodies to find out about internal pollution. In 2003, the Environmental Working Group studied nine people to measure the chemicals in their bodies. These nine people had an average of 53 cancer-causing chemicals in their bodies. They also had an average of 62 chemicals that can damage the brain, and 55 that can harm babies in pregnant women. Even though a lot of chemicals were found in human bodies, the chemicals were found in small amounts. The amounts were small enough that they were probably not hurting the people. However, scientists are worried because most of these chemicals were created by humans. Most of these chemicals did not exist 75 years ago. This proves that we have not only polluted the world—we have polluted our own bodies! How does this pollution get into our bodies? We come into contact with many chemicals every day. For example, everyone uses soap, skin lotion, and shampoo. However, few people know that these products contain harmful chemicals, some of which may cause memory loss. Chemicals known as DEA (diethanolamine) and TEA (triethanolamine) may seep into the skin and stop us from absorbing a helpful nutrient called “choline”. Choline is a nutrient that plays a crucial role in the memory cell making process in the developing brain. Some people worry that every time we wash our hair, we are decreasing our memories. Everyone knows they should brush their teeth regularly, but recent research has shown that some toothpastes can cause cancer. Fluoride is a key ingredient in many toothpastes. However, studies show that fluoride does not really protect our teeth. In fact, fluoride has been connected with bone cancer and other diseases. While we are trying to save our smiles, we could be damaging our health. Women are probably exposed to more chemicals than men because they use more beauty products. Recently, harmful chemicals have been found in nail polish, hair spray, deodorant, and perfume. The chemicals are called “phthalates”. Studies on animals have shown that phthalates can damage the liver, the kidneys, and the lungs. Cosmetic companies say the amounts of phthalates in their products are safe, but consumer protection groups disagree. They say some women use so many products that the levels are actually high. So, the more women try to look beautiful, the more they could be harming their health. In a futuristic story by Ray Bradbury, a man found a pristine stream on a new planet. When he drank from the stream, he died! Why? His body was so polluted that pure water was a poison to him! Perhaps that is only science fiction, but it reminds us to take care of our bodies. We must find ways to reduce the pollution we absorb. Summary: Like our polluted environment, our bodies are no longer pollution-free. Scientists now know that there is pollution in our bodies. On 1 , we have 53 cancer-causing chemicals in our bodies. Even fluoride 2 with bone cancer and other diseases. Some common cosmetics contain small amounts of chemicals, which seep into our 3 when we use these products. They prevent us from absorbing the 4 our bodies need. So, it is 5 that we find ways to reduce the amount of chemicals in our bodies. We should remind our friends and families to take care of their bodies.
问答题Practice 8 Thank you, Mr. Black. It’s a great honor to be appointed as Overseas Sales Manager. To be honest, this promotion came as quite a surprise to me. I’d like to think it’s mainly the contribution of the whole team. I’d like to thank all my colleagues in the company for their support and hard work. Due to their efforts, we’ve started some overseas projects successfully. Looking to the future, I’d still like to maintain contact with everyone, even though I’ll be working at the management level.
