Britain's Solo Sailor

Ellen MacArthur started sailing when she was eight, going out on sailing trips with her aunt. She loved it
so much that she saved her money for three years to buy her first small sailing boat. When she was 18,she
sailed alone around Britain and won the"Young Sailor of the Year"award.
But Ellen really became famous in 2001.Aged only 24,she was one of the only two women who entered
the Vendee Globe round the world solo race, which lasted 100 days.Despite many problems, she came second
in the race out of 24 competitors and she was given a very warm welcome when she returned.
Ambition and determination have always been a big part of Ellen's personality. When she was younger,
she lived in a kind of hut(棚屋)for three years while she was trying to get sponsorship to compete in a trans-
atlantic race. Then she took a one-way ticket to France, bought a tiny seven meter Class Mini yacht, slept
under it while she was repairing it,and then she raced it 4,000 kilometers across the Atlantic in 1997,alone
for 33 days.
Ellen has had to learn many things, because sailing single-handed means that she has to be her own cap-
tamn, electrician, sailmaker, engineer, doctor, journalist, cameraman and cook. She also has to be very ft,and
because of the dangers of sleeping for long periods of time while she's in the middle of the ocean, she has
trained herself to sleep for about 20 minutes at a time.
And she needs courage.Once,In the middle of the ocean, she had to climb the mast(桅杆)of a boat to
repair the sails一at four o'clock in the morning, with 100 kph winds blowing around her.It took her many
hours to make the repairs;Ellen says:"I was exhausted when I came down. It's hard to describe how it feels
to be up there. It's like trying to hold onto a big pole, which for me is just too big to get my arms around, with
someone kicking you all the time and trying to shake you off."
But in her diary , Ellen also describes moments which make it all worthwhile(值得的): " A beautiful
sunrise started the day, with black clouds slowly lit by the bright yellow sun.I have a very strong feeling of
pleasure, being out here on the ocean and having the chance to live this.I just feel lucky to be here."

The word"solo"in the title could be best replaced by___________.
A:self-starter
B:one performer
C:self-made
D:single-handed

选项B中的短语get financial support for a race与文章中的短语get sponsor-ship to compete in a transatlantic race同义。

Oseola McCartyLate one Sunday afternoon in September 1999,Oseola McCarty,an elderly cleaning lady passed away in the little wooden flame house where she had lived and worked most of her life.It may seem like an ordinary end to a humble life, but there was something quite exceptional about this woman. In the summer of 1995,McCarty gave $150,000,most of the money she had saved throughout her life, to the University of Southern Mississippi in her hometown. 共用题干第三篇Britain's Solo SailorEllen MacArthur started sailing when she was eight, going out on sailing trips with her aunt. She loved it so much that she saved her money for three years to buy her first small sailing boat. When she was 18,she sailed alone around Britain and won the"Young Sailor of the Year" award. But Ellen really became famous in 2001.Aged only 24,she was one of the only two women who entered the Vendee Globe round the world solo race, which lasted 100 days.Despite many problems, she came second in the race out of 24 competitors and she was given a very warm welcome when she returned.Ambition and determination have always been a big part of Ellen's personality. When she was younger, she lived in a kind of hut(棚屋)for three years while she was trying to get sponsorship to compete in a trails- atlantic race. Then she took a one-way ticket to France, bought a tiny seven meter Class Mini yacht, slept under it while she was repairing it,and then she raced it 4,000 kilometers across the Atlantic in 1997,alone for 33 days.Ellen has had to learn many things, because sailing single一handed means that she has to be her own cap- tamn, electrician, sailmaker, engineer, doctor, journalist, cameraman and cook. She also has to be very fit,and because of the dangers of sleeping for long periods of time while she's in the middle of the ocean, she hastrained herself to sleep for about 20 minutes at a time. And she needs courage. Once,In the middle of the ocean, she had to climb the mast(桅杆)of a boat to repair the sails一at four o'clock in the morning, with 100 kph winds blowing around her. It took her many hours to make the repairs;Ellen says:"I was exhausted when I came down. It's hard to describe how it feels to be up there. It's like trying to hold onto a big pole, which for me is just too big to get my arms around, with someone kicking you all the time and trying to shake you off."But in her diary , Ellen also describes moments which make it all worthwhile(值得的):" A beautiful sunrise started the day, with black clouds slowly lit by the bright yellow sun.I have a very strong feeling of pleasure, being out here on the ocean and having the chance to live this.I just feel lucky to be here."The word"solo"in the title could be best replaced by__________.A:self-starter B:single-handedC:one performer D:self-made

问答题Practice 5 This isn’t the sort of girl to let the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle go to her head. Even if she did, her family would bring her down to earth. “When I started at Capital the only thing my brothers asked was whether they’d get free records,” she remembers. “And my mum couldn’t even find the station on her radio.” Margherita Taylor is very nice and very easy-going, but very much in control. She is so much a “Capital Radio girl” that you might think she is just doing a good job for the station’s publicity department, although you know what she’s saying really comes from the heart. She smiles a lot, laughs a lot and is generally a great advert for Capital.

问答题Section C (10 marks) Lisa Tyler was weary after a long, hard day at the pottery factory where she works, but as she approached her home in the English city of Stoke-on-Trent, her heart lightened; soon she would be having a nice cup of tea, putting her feet up and watching Friends, her favourite TV series, But first, she needed to change out of her work clothes and pick up her three-year-old son from his grandmother’s house nearby. As Lisa walked up her garden path, she noticed a light flashing on and off in an upstairs bedroom. A shiver went down her back. . What if it was a burglar? Quietly, she crept round to the back of the house to see if there was any sign of a break-in. Sure enough, a window was open and someone’s coat was hanging on the gatepost! Well, 26-year-old Lisa didn’t fancy coming face to face with a burglar, so she ran to a neighbour’s house and rang the police. As she sat waiting for the police to arrive, Lisa’s curiosity got the better of her and she decided to go back and see what was going on. That’s when she saw a leg coming out of the downstairs front window. It was a man climbing out. Lisa gasped in shock. The burglar war carrying her portable television! At this point, Lisa saw red. Besides, nobody was going to stop her watching Friends.“Oh no, you don’t.” she muttered under her breath, as fury swelled inside her. Without even stopping to think, she across the garden and started shouting at the burglar, “Give me my TV—drop it now!” Ignoring her, the man fled across the garden, so Lisa threw herself at him and successfully rugby-tackled him to the ground. The burglar struggled to escape, but Lisa hung on like the best kind of guard dog, despite being punched and kicked. As she looked up, she realized that she recognized the burglar’s face. She was so surprised that she lost her grip and the burglar got away, leaving the TV behind in the garden. By the time the police and her father arrived, Lisa was in tears. “I can’t believe you were so foolish, Lisa,” scolded her father. “You could have been killed.” “I know, but at least he didn’t get my TV.” she replied. Lisa later remembered the name of the burglar, who had been in the same year as her at school. He was later caught and jailed for 15 months after committing a burglary and assault. In May last year, Lisa was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Staffordshire police for her “outstanding courage and public action”. 问答题Practice 7 When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another. Her father had held a position under the English Government and had always been busy and ill himself, and her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little girl at all, and when Mary was born she handed her over to the care of an Ayah, who was made to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must keep the child out of sight as much as possible. So when she was a sickly, fretful, ugly little baby she was kept out of the way, and when she became a sickly, fretful, toddling thing she was kept out of the way also. She never remembered seeing familiarly anything but the dark faces of her Ayah and the other native servants. And as they always obeyed her and gave her her own way in everything, because the Mem Sahib would be angry if she was disturbed by her crying, by the time she was six years old she was as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived. The young English governess who came to teach her to read and write disliked her so much that she gave up her place in three months, and when other governesses came to try to fill it they always went away in a shorter time than the first one. So if Mary had not chosen to really want to know how to read books she would never have learned her letters at all.
